Broncos tame Lions

The Boyd Broncos played host to the Daniel 1 Academy Lions from Cookeville on Tuesday night.
Normally a contender for top spot in the MTAC northern division, the Broncos made short work of the Lions in Westwood with a 68-29 taming that started in the first 30 seconds and never let up.
From the tip, Boyd easily maneuvered through the Lion defense as junior Jayden Reno opened the scoring for the Broncos with a bucket in the paint. Coach Majors unleashed his press immediately which led to two Lion turnovers, a bucket from Tyler Beaty and a deep ball from Trey Cantrell, the first of six 3-pointers for the game from the senior shooting guard.
After only 28 seconds, the Broncos were leading 7-0. The scoring pace slowed, but in no way stopped as six of Boyd’s players were able to score in the opening frame. Joelah Solomon and freshman Jamison Brock contributed a bucket apiece and Blain Wilson had a free throw. With additional buckets from Beaty and Cantrell, the Broncos would take a comfortable 21-9 lead going into the second quarter and they would never look back.
Going into the halftime break, Boyd had a secure, 36-19, lead.
The Lions came into the second half roaring and went on a quick 4-0 run off Bronco turnovers and seemed to celebrate a little too early. Cantrell answered by scoring 13 of his game-high 29 points in the third quarter.
With additional contributions from Beaty and Solomon, the Broncos would take an insurmountable 55-26 lead going into the final eight minutes.
After a couple of quick Boyd treys to open the fourth, benches were emptied for both sides. Bronco freshman Joel Smith was able to connect on his own shot from downtown and freshman Dallas Green was good for a bucket as well.
In the end, the Lions were no match for the speed and size of these Broncos and Boyd would walk confidently out of the gym after holding Daniel 1 to just 10 total second-half points.
The Broncos stay at home and play host to the Patriots from Chattanooga on Friday night. Game time is 6 p.m.

Bronco Scoring: Cantrell 29, Beaty 12, Solomon 10, Wilson 5, Reno 5, Smith 3, Brock 2, Green 2.
