A career night from Logan Martin helped the Boyd Broncos end the regular season on a five-game winning streak.
Martin scored 31 points and three other Broncos were in double figures as Boyd went to Cookeville and defeated Daniel One Academy 85-67 Saturday.
Boyd (21-11) clinched the No. 2 seed in the MTAC south division with its fifth win in a row and earned its 11th victory in its last 13 games. Martin was a big reason why the Broncos tamed the Lions.
The junior post came off the bench and dominated against Daniel One Academy. Martin exploited his size in the paint to score a career high in the Broncos’ final regular season game.
Coach Chris Sullens complimented the play of his big men, which included a 16-point night for Edgar Morales.
“Logan became the fifth different player to score 25 points or more in a game for us this year. It was part of a great game for our big men,” said Sullens. “We really shared the basketball. To score 85 points while hitting only two 3-pointers is impressive. It’s been a lot of fun watching this team lately.”
Colin Stubblefield also had 16 points and Jake Driver added 11 as the Broncos took control from the outset.
Boyd started the game on a 17-3 run and never trailed against the Lions. With Martin and Morales controlling the paint, the Broncos led 39-32 going into halftime.
Coach Sullens urged his team during the break to continue to focus on getting to the rim on offense. The Broncos listened while feeding Martin on the block. Martin displayed an array of moves in the post to anchor the Bronco offense and give his team a 59-47 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Boyd never faltered down the stretch. The Broncos finished off a night where the team hit 11-of-11 free throws by making several shots from the charity stripe in the final period.
The Broncos will try to continue their winning streak in the MTAC tournament. Boyd will play host to the Middle Tennessee Heat in its first tournament game Thursday night. The Broncos beat the Heat 59-36 in their last meeting.
Thursday’s game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. at J.K. Stanley Gymnasium.
