Broncos ride high against Knights

The Boyd Broncos opened the New Year with a 78-67 home victory over the Knights of Riverside Christian Academy from Fayetteville on Tuesday night.
It was a heated contest with tempers flaring from both teams as the score seemed to hover within 4 to 5 points with the Knights pulling to within 1 point several times.
Joelah Solomon would get the scoring started in the first frame for Boyd by going hard to the rim and drawing the foul. He would sink the free throw to complete the three-point play. On the next Bronco possession, Trey Cantrell would hit his first 3-pointer of the game and tally 10 of his game-high 27 points in the first quarter.
Tyler Beaty would add a pair of his own buckets while senior Blaine Wilson would connect from downtown and junior Jayden Reno added a free throw. While the scoring seemed to be going well for Boyd, both Solomon and Cantrell would pick up their first two fouls.
Boyd took a 21-16 lead going into the second quarter.
With Solomon and Cantrell playing sparse minutes due to their early foul trouble, Reno and Beaty picked up the scoring slack for the Broncos. Reno would go for 9 points and Beaty for 7 to maintain the 5-point lead over the Knights and take a 37-32 advantage going into halftime.
Riverside was able to cut that deficit to just 3 points after the third quarter and also force Beaty, Cantrell and Solomon all into picking up their third fouls.
The Knights continued to take it right at the Broncos and with only four minutes left. Boyd was barely clinging to a 61-58 lead and seemingly lost all the momentum.
Coach Lucas Majors called timeout, settled his team, and coming out of the break picked up the tempo offensively. This did the trick as in those last four minutes the Broncos would outrun and outscore the Knights by 8 and expand their lead for a 78-67 final.
Boyd stays home to face The Webb School (TSSAA Division II) on Friday night.
Bronco Scoring: Cantrell 27, Reno 16, Wilson 12, Beaty 13, Solomon 10.
