Boyd High School is committed to making big advances in its athletic programs in the coming years. Finding a football coach seems to be step one.
Athletic director Brent Warren has visions of many different sports for the Broncos and Lady Broncos, but right now his work involves interviewing football coaches willing to start an 8-man team at Boyd. Warren has narrowed his coaching search to four people and is hopeful sometime early in February the Broncos will have its man.
“There has been large interest in the position. We’ve narrowed it down to four applicants and are doing a detailed interview process,” said Warren. “At this point, we’ve interviewed two and plan to interview two more by the end of next week.
“We want to hire the right person for the position and make sure we find someone that is completely committed and is willing to do it the right way at Boyd. So, we are not getting in any rush to make a decision.”
Once Boyd has a coach in place, a football meeting will be held and anyone who is interested in playing for the Broncos would need to be at that meeting. Warren said the meeting will be announced in early February – likely coinciding or following the naming of the new coach.
Warren continues to have faith Boyd can build highly competitive sports programs and has full board support in new endeavors.
“Our plan in five years is to be at the top in all sports in the Midstate area,” said Warren. “The board has been nothing but supportive. They understand that football is a sport that we have needed to offer to our students and know that it will bring nothing but positive things to Boyd.”
While football is the focus of the school right now, Warren also is working to build softball and baseball programs as soon as possible. Boyd had both programs recently, but lack of overall numbers forced the school to not field teams the past few years.
Warren cited the softball team’s success in particular as a reason to explore bringing the spring sports back to the school.
“Our softball program was near the top of our district when we were still in the TSSAA. We want to get back to those days,” said Warren.
Other sports are being considered, but Warren wants to establish a few new teams now while also growing the basketball program.
“Right now, we are concentrating on getting these sports - football, softball and baseball – off the ground and running. We also want to continue to improve our current teams,” said Warren. “We plan to make the NACA national tournament in Dayton a yearly occurrence in basketball.”
Warren is open to talking to any girl or boy that is interested in coming to Boyd.
“We want to expand our talent and grow our athletic programs. Our vision for the near future is that we will be a true option when children reach the middle school and high school level for their athletic endeavors,” said Warren. “We will grow as a school through strong moral beliefs, athletics and top-notch educators.
“We realize this and will make a tremendous effort to improve year after year with the best student-athletes this county and the surrounding counties has to offer.”
