The sound of sneakers squeaking on the court and a basketball swishing through the net could be heard at Warren County Middle School Monday night. The fifth- and sixth-grade elementary tournaments, sponsored by Irving College, began with four games on opening night.
In girls action, the Eastside Lady Bulldogs were big winners against the Morrison Lady Eagles. Led by Kapri Talley, the Lady Bulldogs won 33-6. Irving College also advanced to the tournament semifinals with a 21-6 victory over Centertown.
In the boys tournament, the Dibrell Wildcats beat the Eastside Bulldogs 44-29 and the Centertown Warriors defeated the Boyd Broncos 33-17.
Talley played a starring role in the Lady Bulldogs’ 27-point blowout of Morrison Monday. Talley scored a team-high 10 points, most coming in the first half as Eastside built a huge lead.
Talley and teammate Lexi Loader each had four points on layups in the first quarter helping the Lady Bulldogs start the game on a 15-0 run. Cierran Baker finally snapped Morrison’s cold spell in the second quarter on a layup, but Talley answered with another basket and Loader added four more points to give Eastside a 23-2 halftime advantage.
Talley pushed her total to double figures with two baskets in the third quarter before Eastside made substitutions. Neither team would score in the final period.
Loader finished with eight points for Eastside while Rylie Crawford added seven, five of which came in the first quarter. Kyla Baker, Kate Bost, Grayson Hillis and Kade Wilcher had two points apiece.
Morrison got baskets from Baker, Chelsea Martin and Aiden Cummins.
Irving College’s victory over Centertown was sparked by 13 points from Hannah Lee. Lee scored six first-half points, then put an exclamation point on her big night by swishing a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.
Emily Fults added six points and Kenley Cathcart chipped in two for the Lady Tigers. Ricki Valenta scored four points and Madalyn Stubblefield added two for Centertown.
Micah Webster was the talk of the tournament Monday night when he led Dibrell to a 15-point victory over Eastside. The Bulldogs couldn’t stop Webster, who led all scorers with 22 points in the opener - including pouring in 14 first-quarter points.
Jacob Lann was next in scoring for Dibrell with nine points. Lann’s 3-pointer in the third quarter gave the Wildcats a double-digit lead the team wouldn’t relinquish. Austin Green added four points while Will Wrisner and Jake Jones scored two points each.
Eastside was led by Trayton Cole with 10 points. Rounding out the scoring for the Bulldogs was Alec Hobbs with six, Charlie Moore with four, Cruz Reyes with three and Alex Greer, Dylan Partain and Christian Rogers with two.
Carter Mansfield was one point away from matching Boyd’s output on his own in Centertown’s 16-point victory over the Broncos. Mansfield scored 16 points, all coming in the final three quarters as the Warriors turned a 7-6 deficit in the first quarter into a blowout win.
Clay Eckenrod was next with five points, followed by Wyatt Wilson and Jared Scruggs with three points apiece. Westen Wilson, Brad Burke and T.J. Howard chipped in two points each for the Warriors.
Heath Kuykendall led the Broncos with 12 points. Bryson Stiles hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter for his only points while Jamison Brock added two.
