Coach Chris Sullens knew the Pioneers were loaded coming into this season, but even he may be surprised at just how successfully the WCHS boys basketball team has begun the 2017-18 season.
After claiming the Sonic Shootout championship last week in Sparta, the Pioneers will enter the new year with a 13-2 record.
Warren County got off to a hot start, winning its first five games. The Pioneers began the season with a pair of victories in the Franklin County Hall of Fame showcase, then followed with home victories over Upperman and Cannon County before traveling to defeat DeKalb County.
The only team to taste victory over the Pioneers this season is Tullahoma, which beat Warren County twice by a combined six points.
Warren County is currently in the midst of a five-game winning streak, three coming in the Shootout when the Pioneers clawed to a championship. In the championship game, Warren County topped district rival White County 75-74.
The Pioneers have four players currently averaging double figures, led by sophomore Irving Espinoza's 14.8 points per game. Seniors Isaiah Grayson (13.6), Chance Hobbs (13.3) and Tyree Ladet (12.1) are also potent scorers.
The Pioneers return to action Tuesday with a road game against Coffee County.
