What’s next for the Tennessee Titans? I was fortunate enough to catch the last home game of the season versus the Houston Texans since the weather was nice.
So going into the final home game of the season, I already had a plan laid out on how to improve over my last trip.
The Texans kicked the ball off away from where I was positioned. I was one of only a couple who had stayed behind for the better spots when the Titans move the ball down field in our direction.
The only problem with my plan was Tennessee didn’t get the ball to my end of the field for the first three possessions. With Marcus Mariota out and Zach Mettenberger in, the Titan offense was stagnant against a quicker and much more aggressive Texans defense.
I finally decided if I was going to get any photos, it would be in my best interest to move to the other end of the field. From that point, I realized the Titans were probably not going to move the ball much against the Texans defense.
As the game lingered, it also became increasingly clear the Titans were losing fan support. Somewhere in the fourth quarter around the 12-minute mark, the Titans were threatening but gave possession back to Houston.
After an outpouring of displeasure from Titan fans, I looked up and witnessed hundreds of football fans headed for the gates. I remember posting, “a mass exodus at Nissan Stadium” on Facebook as fans fled from field level all the way to the top.
It was a very sad scene in Nashville and as I talked to several others on the field it does not seem entirely clear on what the biggest concern in Nashville is as of yet.
Many people think change starts at the top. Since that final home game and a loss to the Colts who were led by a practice squad QB the following week, Titans general manager Ruston Webster was subsequently let go. Maybe change does start at the top.
Can interim head coach Mike Mularkey get it done? Who will the Titans pursue with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft? Do we need offense or defense?
As I left the stadium, I heard the Titans needed a running back and others thought what good is a running back if you don’t have an offensive line to block for them. Maybe we need receivers because I saw pass after pass dropped that Sunday – and not because Mettenberger can’t throw. Many were off the hands of the intended receivers.
I for one don’t have the answer for what the Titans need but they need a lot more than what is there now. Right on.
Right On! 1-8
What now for Titans?
