Letters to the editor- History deserves to be preserved

Reflecting on my time at Warren County High School during the late 1970s and early 1980s, I fondly remember joining an incredible program that shaped my future. This was the Tennessee Tomorrow club, an after-school initiative led by the inspirational Mr. Haley. Although the specifics of the club’s mission statement escape me, the impact it had on my life remains clear. The club instilled in me a sense of service, community involvement and compassion for those less fortunate. These values have guided me through numerous volunteer projects both in my home state and abroad, enriching my understanding of community and service.

One particularly memorable project was the restoration of an abandoned cemetery situated across from the county jail. Under Mr. Haley’s passionate guidance, club members, along with our parents and friends, revitalized that neglected resting place. Richard Wisneiwski and his stepson constructed a perimeter fence, further preserving the site. Although I have since moved away from Warren County, the memories and lessons from those days remain vivid. It saddens me to see the cemetery once again in disrepair during my visits home, as it symbolizes a forgotten piece of our shared heritage.

Warren County’s rich history deserves to be honored and preserved. With my mother’s family roots tracing back to around 1800 in the area, I have uncovered many fascinating stories through genealogical research. I believe that the small, obscure graveyard holds untold stories waiting to be discovered and shared. I am eager to collaborate with like-minded individuals to preserve this piece of our history, recognizing and honoring those interred there. By engaging local businesses and exploring grant opportunities, we can restore and maintain this hallowed ground. Together, let us honor our past while looking forward to a future that values and preserves our rich heritage.
