Leon Barnes, 76, of Smithville died Tuesday morning at DeKalb Community Hospital’s emergency room.
He was born Nov. 4, 1937 in DeKalb County to his parents, the late Grover and Emmy Walls Barnes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, A.B. and Frank Barnes and sister, Lillian Turner. He was a member of Mt. Hope the Baptist Church of Christ and retired from Cumberland Lumber Company. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ann Barnes; son and daughter-in-law, David and Suzette Barnes; two grandchildren, Kade and Ashley Barnes, all of Smithville; sister-in-law, Anna Ruth Barnes and niece Carolyn (Billy Ross) Rankhorn, all of McMinnville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Dwight Knowles and Garry McBride officiating with burial to follow at Jefferson Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., and Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Mt. Hope the Baptist Church of Christ in memory of Mr. Leon.
