Smithville resident and DeKalb County native John Thurman Johnson, 85, was born Dec. 9, 1926 and died Dec. 13 at River Park Hospital following an extended illness.
A nurseryman, farmer and carpenter and member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church, he was the son of the late, Andrew and Rebecca Malone Johnson. He was married to Dorothy Hazel Jones, who preceded him in death May 12, 1999.
He is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Janie and Charlie Adams and Virginia Reed, all of McMinnville; four grandchildren and their spouses, Kim and Steve Dykes, Kent and Betty Perry, Tony Rigsby and Kristi Davis, all of McMinnville; step-grandchildren and their spouses, Charlie and Kelli Adams, and Cherri and Randy Taylor, all of McMinnville, and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today in High’s Chapel with Dwight Knowles and Roland Sharp officiating. Burial will follow at Jefferson Cemetery in DeKalb County. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service today at High’s.
