Sparta resident and Franklin County native Herbert Lee Ashley, 75, was born March 30, 1940 and died Feb. 13 at Saint Thomas River Park Hospital following a one-year illness.Mr. Ashley was purchasing manager for Powermatic Corporation for 27 years, member of Central Church of Christ in Sparta, a graduate of Van Buren County High School, and veteran of the United States Army serving from 1962 to 1965. He was very active in raising money for the March of Dimes and took pride in the large amounts of money he raised. He was an avid fisherman and golfer, and loved music and to play his guitar and sing.He was the son of the late Russell L. and Minnie Notie Mooneyham Ashley.
