Rock Island resident and Van Buren County native Austin Grissom, 83, was born Feb. 19, 1936 and died Sept. 14 at his residence.
A self-employed carpenter, he was the son of the late Ivon Doyle and Sally Lourine Hillis Grissom. Mr. Grissom was an avid walleye fisherman and loved attending bluegrass festivals. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter Rita McLaughlin, brothers Freddie Grissom and Kenneth “Sonny” Grissom and sister Zora Lee “Sis” Hillis.
Mr. Grissom was married July 12, 1965 to Peggy Jo Woodward Grissom of Rock Island. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Tina Myers of Rock Island, Sheila (Kevin) Butcher of McMinnville and Sally (Jeff) Baker of Rock Island, five grandchildren, Lytle Jackson of Franklin, Kyla Baker of Rock Island, Chanaey Ficken of Atlanta, Ga., Nicholas Myers of Rock Island, and Shea (Tyler) Curtis of McMinnville, great-grandchild Brentley Myers, sister Evolyn (Joe) Powers of McMinnville, stepsons Richard (Marion) McLaughlin and Anthony McLaughlin both of Michigan, stepdaughter Pamela (Steve) Roof of Michigan, several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service and interment will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Shellsford Cemetery with Kyle Grissom officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, and 10 a.m. until time of service Monday at High’s. Online condolences may be made at www.highfuneralhome.com.
