Woman avoids jail for trying to open vault

A woman who was caught on camera trying to get into a bank vault was granted more leniency than her husband as she will get no jail time. The woman, Donna D. Barnes, was granted a four-year judicial diversion by Circuit Court Judge Bart Stanley. The diversion means she can have her criminal record erased as long as she gets into no further trouble during her four-year probationary period. Her husband, Larry Mitchell Barnes, was sentenced this summer to serve 60 days of a three-year sentence for his part in the incident.Their charges were brought last year after investigators said they tried to break into the vault at the Security Federal branch on Highway 55 near Morrison. They were working as after-hours janitors at the bank and were therefore left alone in the bank, unsupervised except for surveillance cameras inside.Suspicion first was cast on the pair when there were some minor thefts inside the building such as candy bars being sold for Relay for Life.
