Parents of students who ride a school bus will soon be able to pinpoint the location of their child by simply using an app on their cellphone or computer.“They will need the student identification number and last name,” said Durham School Services division administrator Sherri Layne, noting that will be a requirement so such information is kept secure and only in the hands of family or trusted individuals.Durham will roll out the app by Jan. 1 at the latest. The private bus contractor will contact parents of children who ride buses to clarify how they may download and use the app.“You can use it from a smartphone or a computer,” Layne told the Board of Education in unveiling the new initiative.Layne explained the locator app will be a great asset since it can find the present location of their child’s bus and also calculate the time the bus will arrive at their bus stop.“This is really going to help working parents,” said Director of Schools Bobby Cox. “It will also be a great help to parents of children with special needs since they have to be at the stop to meet their children.”Layne said the app will allow parents to rest easier on the rare days when their child’s bus is late.“Sometimes there could be traffic or they may get behind an accident and that makes the bus later than usual,” Layne said.
