Three-day cookout comes to end

When the smoke cleared after three days of grilling at McMinnville Civic Center, Long Dawgs from Smyrna emerged as the grand champion yesterday at the third annual Smokin’ in McMinnville.The Backyard Division, which featured several local competitors, was won by Big B’s BBQ from Springfield.The Saturday cook-offs capped three days of activities that saw some grillers set up as early as Wednesday night in the back parking lot at the Civic Center.It turned out to be the best attended Smokin’ in McMinnville to date as crowds swarmed the area Thursday night for the charity cook-off, then returned Friday night to hear live entertainment, socialize, and enjoy a variety of meat hot off the grill.Bill Locke grabbed attention with a gumbo dish he was handing out to visitors at his booth and there were also crab legs making their way around the area. Ribs, chicken and BBQ sandwiches could be found around every corner.Athletic events became the focus Saturday morning with a 5K run and walk that featured 133 participants. Carol Nelson was the overall female winner with a time of 21:16, while Drew Randolph was the overall male winner with a time of 19:12.A volleyball tournament took place on three nets set up in the outfield of Edley Newman Field and Gilley Pool was a popular place to beat the heat.
