NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Severe thunderstorms that likely produced tornadoes have struck in central and southeastern Tennessee.

Many reports of power being out and trees being down came in to the National Weather Service office in Nashville shortly after 7 a.m. CDT Wednesday after forecasters issued a tornado warning because of a radar signature that indicated a likely tornado in Rutherford County.

Forecaster Mark Rose says a funnel was sighted by a Murfreesboro fire hall crew about the same time.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency says that in Hamilton County, damage is widespread in Tiftonia where a fire hall has collapsed and a roof has been damaged at a middle school as students took cover.

In West Tennessee, earlier downpours caused the evacuation of some personnel at a naval installation at Millington.
