MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of an inmate in the Johnson County Jail.

TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland tells the Johnson City Press (http://bit.ly/1UMrEOW) the agency is investigating the death of 48-year-old David Pendergrass on March 19 at the Johnson County Jail. The TBI began the investigation at the request of 1st Judicial District Attorney General Tony Clark.

Niland says Pendergrass had been brought to the jail the night before his death. Around 4:40 p.m. on March 19, when corrections officers brought his meal to his cell, Pendergrass was found unresponsive but alive. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

The TBI is awaiting the results of the autopsy to determine the cause of death.
