Smartt has shuttle memories

McMinnville resident Johnny Smartt remembers hauling loads and loads of pipe to Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., to help build launch pads for the space shuttle program. As a trucker for Tennessee Metal Fab in Campaign, Smartt estimates he made around 50 trips to Florida with large loads of pipe.He was able to take his son, Rick, with him on one of those trips so you can imagine his delight when the two of them were able to return to Kennedy Space Center over the summer as part of the Hot Rod Power Tour. The two were at Kennedy Space Center on June 5.“It was neat to go to the same spot where we were 30 years before,” said Johnny. “It took the office months to get me clearance when I was driving the truck.
