For all the people who treat the Barren Fork River like a giant trash can, hundreds of volunteers gathered last weekend for the 7th annual River Ride and Cleanup.Approximately 1.4 tons of garbage was pulled from a 10-mile stretch of the river on Saturday, in addition to 40 tires, according to McMinnville Breakfast Rotary president Ryan J. Moore. Breakfast Rotary sponsored the event.Warren County High School Interact Club member Jett Urtubees wrestled with a tractor trailer tire until he dug it out of the mud and was able to bring it in on top of a kayak he shared with Savannah Kelley.Prizes were given for the most unusual items retrieved. Winners were Manchester Interact volunteers Hayden Holder and Rhett Watts, who won a mountain bike by pulling out a desktop computer monitor complete with hardrive.Second place and a $25 gift certificate to Topz Frozen Yogurt went to Clay Whitt of Manchester who found a “Tha Carter” Lil Wayne CD, which had been purposely tied to an aluminum can and weighted down.
