As more Warren County families sink into poverty, the local food safety net is being strained by sharply increased demand and drastic cutbacks in government support, leaders of the Warren County Emergency Food Bank say in a WCPI broadcast this week. The number of meals provided by the food bank has increased 85 percent from 2008 to 2011, a development that parallels U.S. Census data showing a surge in the number of Warren County families living below the official poverty line.In Warren County people “make a choice between paying utility bills and eating, absolutely,” said Karen Hubert, who, along with husband Chris Hubert, have been volunteer leaders for the nonprofit food bank, which depends on donations from citizens and government subsidies. In a recording session for public radio WCPI’s “Focus” program, Chris Hubert said a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant that proved a major boost to the struggling food bank last year will be cut by 60 percent this year.
