Pre-K, Kindergarten registration nears

Parents are being asked to prepare for pre-K and kindergarten registration for all children who will enter pre-K and kindergarten in 2012-13. Registration will be held at Bobby Ray Elementary Gym.
Children who will be 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2012 are eligible to attend kindergarten in the 2012-13 school year. Children entering kindergarten may register Thursday, April 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday, April 20 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The registration for kindergarten is conducted at one central location so all of the school system’s personnel resources can come together to help screen the children for any possible problems that might hinder their progress in school. The screening is not an intelligence or achievement test. It is simply a way to pick up problems such as hearing, speech, or vision impairments, or underdeveloped physical or learning skills.
Tennessee Department of Education policies require all children to be screened before entering kindergarten. Any child who misses kindergarten screening will be delayed a little next year so parents or guardians are urged to take advantage of this opportunity to start their child in school knowing they are ready for success.
The registration process for kindergarten will take approximately one hour, and the school system wants parents or guardians to stay with their child throughout registration. There is no special preparation, and school system officials think both parents and children will find the registration and screening enjoyable.
Please bring the following records with you when you bring your child to kindergarten registration:
1. Birth certificate
2. Immunization record
3. Social Security number
4. Record of medical examinations by a physician
5. Insurance card
6. Proof of address
All children must complete one year of state-approved kindergarten before they enter first grade in Tennessee.
For the convenience of parents or guardians, the school system will arrange appointments for the kindergarten and pre-K registration. If the child will attend Centertown, Dibrell, Morrison, Eastside, Hickory Creek, Bobby Ray, Irving College, or West Elementary, call the school your child will attend for an appointment. School secretaries will work with parents to arrange a convenient time for the child’s registration.
Appointments may be made beginning Monday during school hours.
Parents choosing to apply for pre-K may register on Tuesday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or Wednesday, April 18 from 8 a.m. to noon. To apply for pre-K, please bring:
• Proof of income and address only to Bobby Ray Gym.
If the child, the family, or any member of household qualifies for one of the following, please provide proof:
• Early Headstart, Headstart, Foster Care, Homeless, Migrant, Families First, siblings met eligibility for Free or Reduced Meal Program in 2011-2012, or family receives Food Stamps (need food stamp case number, not the EBT card). Please call the school to schedule an appointment.
Children who will be 4 years old by Sept. 30, 2012 may apply for Warren County Schools pre-K.
Headstart will be present at screening to discuss possible enrollment for Headstart 2012-13.
