A Smartt Station mother caught raising her children in squalor has been sentenced to a month in jail. The mother, Reba M. Prater, 36, entered a guilty plea to the charge of child abuse and was directed by General Sessions Judge Bill Locke to serve 30 days of an 11-month, 29-day sentence and must undergo anger management and work with the Department of Children’s Services in order to keep her kids. Her sentence comes after lawmen happened onto the deplorable conditions as they were conducting a check to see if her 10-year-old son had been physically abused. Sheriff’s investigator Travis Thaxton looked around the house while he was on the scene and discovered the level of neglect the children had suffered.“I observed, throughout the house, there was dried feces on the floors,” Thaxton said. “In the boy’s bedroom, feces was spread over the walls and floors.”Thaxton said he found the same to be true in a girl’s room where feces was also evident.
