Officers were called to check on the welfare of a man who was seen walking Friday morning in this area behind Westwood Church of Christ. They discovered he had a gunshot wound to the head.

McMinnville Police Department is investigating a shooting victim who was found in Westwood.

Officers were called to Westwood Church of Christ on Friday morning in regard to a welfare check on an individual seen walking in the wooded area behind the church. When they arrived, what they discovered was a severely injured man.

“There was a male found walking around behind Westwood Church next to the pavilion,” said McMinnville Police Department detective Katelyn Cannon. “He did have a gunshot wound to the head. At this time, he is still alive.”

The update was released at 4 p.m. Friday. The man was found just before 8 a.m. Friday morning.

Cannon continued, “That’s all the info I can release at this time.”

She did not elaborate on whether officers believe the gunshot may have been self-inflicted.

The man was transported to Ascension Saint Thomas River Park Hospital. It is unknown if he was later flown to another facility or continues to be treated locally.

No further information is being released at this time. “It is still under investigation,” said Cannon.
