A woman was killed and her young passenger injured Sunday night when her car struck a tree while she was trying to get away from a highway patrolman. The driver, Lauren K. Bain, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 8 p.m. crash on Mullican Road. Her passenger, identified only as her 9-year-old cousin, was airlifted from the scene to Vanderbilt for treatment of her injuries.According to Highway Patrol Lt. Billy Prater, Bain’s 2014 Toyota Scion was clocked speeding on Nashville Highway near Bethany.“The officer fell in behind her westbound vehicle and was attempting to catch up when he noticed she was passing traffic on the shoulder,” said Prater, noting that Bain made a quick maneuver onto Mullican Road which runs off the four-lane to Woodbury. “The officer had to turn around and go back.”When the trooper pulled onto Mullican Road looking for the Scion he found it had crashed and had burst into flames.“The passenger was getting out but the driver was still in the car,” said Prater, noting the trooper got his fire extinguisher and pushed back the flames enough to pull Bain from the wreckage before it became fully engulfed.
