Vehicle ownership provides increased freedom, but it is also a luxury not every teen can afford. Thanks to a local group, one young man has his first.
The Great Bodies crew has purchased a 1992 Nissan pickup for 18-year-old WCHS senior Tyler Keener.
“I appreciate this,” said Keener. “I don’t know what else to say other than thank you.”
Group member Blaine Wilcher says Great Bodies wanted to help.
“Tyler is a great young man and we believe this will help him build a great future,” said Wilcher. “We understand that most of these kids don’t have the resources we did growing up, so we love the opportunity to do something like this. When you’re a teenager, having good transportation is one of the biggest privileges you can have.”
Other Great Bodies members are G.L. Wilcher, David Burch, Gary Lorance, Bobby Pope, Cody Bogle, David Griffith, Michael Mooneyhan, Chase Racine, Ervin “Big E” Dixson, and Josh Densteadt.
The crew met Keener through Kids of the Community. Funds for the truck purchase came from member donations and money raised from Great Bodies cruise-ins.
“We go to sponsors each year and ask for donations to buy our dash plaques,” said Wilcher. “We then give them away at our cruise-ins for any donation. We then give this money to KOTC.”
The organization didn’t pump the brakes on the gift. Instead, it paid the first six months of insurance responsibility for the aspiring teen.
“Tyler is a wonderful young man,” said KOTC director Barry Dishman. “He’s a good role model for the rest of the kids. He’s always out front doing what a leader is supposed to do. We did pay the first six months of his insurance. We would never put a young person on the road without appropriate insurance.”
