A traffic stop near downtown Wednesday night resulted in drug charges against a local man.
John Jacob Jedi Berggren, 38, was booked on charges of possession of fentanyl and possession of drug paraphernalia after being discovered passed out in his vehicle at the corner of Post Rd. and Oak Hill Drive.
According to the arrest report filed by McMinnville Police Officer Spencer Haley, who was dispatched to the scene just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Berggren’s vehicle was stationary at the intersection for an extended period of time, and when approached, Berggren was reportedly slumped over and passed out in the driver’s seat. The vehicle was running and in drive at the time, with Berggren’s foot on the brake pedal.
Berggren allegedly woke up after Officer Shirley knocked several times, and stepped out of the vehicle at which point officers reportedly noticed a cut straw in the driver’s seat which contained residue.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers reported discovering several pieces of cut aluminum foil with residue, two more cut straws, a glass pipe with residue, and a round container holding a white substance. The substance was field tested and reportedly was found to be fentanyl, in an amount weighing approximately two grams.
A wallet allegedly belonging to a family member who lived nearby was reportedly also discovered in the vehicle, leading to officers conducting a welfare check at the family member’s address. The relative in question was found to be unharmed at home after officers arrived at the residence.
Berggren is being held at the Warren County Jail under a total bond of $75,000 - $70,000 for the fentanyl charge, and an additional $5,000 for the paraphernalia charge. He is scheduled to appear for arraignment in General Sessions Court Feb. 20.
