Shoebox collection deadline nears

Pictured is Savannah Durre atop a donation of 253 shoeboxes made by Covenant Fellowship Church during its packing party last week. Nov. 18-25 is collection week for Operation Christmas Child. The local drop-off site is First Baptist Church on North Spring Street.

Shoebox donation week is underway and residents have until this Monday, Nov. 25, to help make Christmas merry for an underprivileged child.

“It’s going well so far,” said Debbie Patterson, local event organization. “We received 1,700 boxes on the first day. That’s a good start. We appreciate everyone’s support for this program. It’s so easy to fill a shoebox with items for a child and that simple gift makes a tangible difference in the life of a child.”

Warren County’s collection site is First Baptist Church, 403 N. Spring Street.

Suggested items include small cars, balls, dolls, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, Slinky, toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap in a plastic bag, comb, washcloth, hard candy, T-shirts, socks, ball caps, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, a sewing kit, a fishing kit and flashlights with extra batteries.

School supplies are always needed. Do not include used or damaged items, war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures, chocolate or food, out-of-date candy, liquids or lotions, medications or vitamins, breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers, aerosol cans, or items not appropriate for children.

Warren County’s goal this year is 4,050 shoeboxes, a slight increase from what was originally announced.
