A local initiative is taking aim at food insecurity among seniors, particularly in their access to farm-fresh produce.
Every year, the Warren County Farmers’ Market and the Warren County Health Department team up to put the Farmers’ Market Senior Nutrition Program in motion.
This program enables senior citizens over the age of 60 to receive vouchers for produce at the market. The $40 checks issued through this program are for use from July 1 to Sept. 15 of this year and are issued when approved.
To qualify for this program, citizens must be able to provide the following proof:
• Residency in Warren County (Example proof: Utility ill, mail with address)
• Are 60 or over (Example proof: Driver’s license, photo ID)
• Meet income guidelines (Example proof: social security award letter, bank statement)
This year’s income guidelines are as follows:
• One-unit family: $23,475 annually; $1,957 monthly
• Two-unit family: $31,725 annually; $2,644 monthly
Applications for the nutrition program will be taken on June 24 and July 1 at the Warren County Farmers’ Market, which is located in the covered area near the water tower. No appointment is necessary, interested parties can attend anytime from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
