U.S. Army Lt. Col. Carrick McCarthy, right, presents the Middle Tennessee State University ROTC medallion to Charles E. Smith as fellow Rotarians honored him Thursday as their last surviving World War II veteran. Joining in the event are his son, Larry Smith, his wife Patty, along with great-grandson Wilson Dunlap.
War will never be the same, Lt. Col. Carrick McCarthy told McMinnville Rotarians on Thursday during the civic club’s observance of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the massive Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe on June 6, 1944.
