A man who formed his fingers like a gun and shouted “bang, bang, bang” while he pretended to shoot a deputy has been ordered to serve nearly a year in jail.
Bobbie Freddie Phillips, 48, has been ordered to serve 340 days of a four-year sentence for a long list of charges that includes evading arrest with risk of death or injury, reckless endangerment, assault, first-offense DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, and possession of meth.
Asked by officers why he pretended to shoot deputy Calvin Hammond with his fingers, Phillips reportedly said, “Because I’m drunk!”
The incident took place in March in the Mt. Leo area.
“The situation started on Bridge Street,” said McMinnville police officer Andy Aguilar. “I responded to a call of a hit-and-run. Bonnie Cochran reported being sideswiped and forced off the road. She gave a description of the vehicle which had left the scene. She reported it had turned onto Beersheba Street and was heading inbound.”
Patrolling that area was deputy Hammond. He saw a vehicle matching the description of the one involved in the wreck and tried to initiate a traffic stop. Phillips finally stopped at the intersection of Beersheba and East Main.
“The male subject was taken into custody after a short physical altercation,” the arrest warrant states. “Deputy Hammond observed signs of impairment on his person such as the smell of alcoholic beverages, slurred speech, glossy eyes and he stated he was drunk when questioned.”
Phillips picked up more charges upon his arrival at Warren County Jail. That’s when meth was found in a body cavity.
“Mr. Phillips was found to have a white crystal-like substance tucked into his rectum,” the arrest warrant states. “As the corrections officers were retrieving the plastic baggie, Mr. Phillips ingested some of the substance. The remainder of the substance retrieved was .4 grams.”
