Open house on street closures Monday

The public is invited to attend a meeting this Monday to discuss guidelines for closing Main Street for downtown events.

Public input is being sought for developing a policy for approving downtown events and street closures. A meeting will be held this Monday, Jan. 6, at 5 p.m.

Main Street closures have caused public concerns and discussions by city officials regarding how many times each year the street will be closed, setting specific times for those closures, how much notification event organizers must provide the city, and how best to notify downtown businesses about those closures. 

The meeting is being organized by the city’s Community Development Department with a goal of gathering information that will be used to generate a written policy and procedure for officials to follow in approving downtown events and street closures.

“At the first open house, the public is invited to lift up and discuss all the opportunities, challenges and other important considerations related to downtown events and street closures,” said Katie Kemezis, city planner. “City staff will also ask for input on how to make the approval process comprehensive and user-friendly for applicants.” 

Once staff use the input from the community to construct a policy, a second open house will be arranged to share a draft of the policy with the public for additional feedback. 

Individuals do not have to live downtown or own a business or property downtown to participate. Anyone who cares about downtown events and street closures is encouraged to attend the community discussion. Children are welcome.

The public input meeting is being held at the Chamber of Commerce Community Room. Light refreshments will be served.
