A man who attempted to stab a deputy and then ran naked into a swamp has been released on time served and ordered to undergo a mental exam.The man, Joseph Edward Bifaro, 20, entered a guilty plea before General Sessions Court Judge Bill Locke to the reduced charge of simple assault and was placed on probation for an 11-month, 29-day period and directed to undergo a mental examination. He was originally charged with felony assault, indecent exposure, resisting stop, and public intoxication, all of which were dismissed as a result of his plea agreement.Deputies encountered Bifaro while checking on a suspicious vehicle off Spencer Highway. They found the suspect holding a knife to his own throat.“He was trying to cut his throat,” recalled deputy Tyler Glenn.
