Radiologic Technologist Bethel Lewis was recognized for his 50 years of service at Ascension Saint Thomas River Park.

A crowd of family, friends and coworkers gathered Tuesday afternoon to celebrate Lewis’ 50th anniversary. Lewis began working at the hospital on Oct. 2, 1972.

“Bethel we want to thank you. Everyone here knows how hard you work. You have been here a long time and we really appreciate everything you do every day,” said Manager of Radiology Sean Woodall.

State Representative Paul Sherrell brought a proclamation recognizing Lewis for his years of service.

The proclamation reads, “Bethel Lewis epitomizes the spirit and commitment that are characteristic of a true Tennessean. His professionalism and dedication to serving this community are evident to all who have had the pleasure of knowing him.”

Lewis was appreciative even though the hospital tricked him into coming back for his party.

He says he still enjoys working and thanked everyone for the recognition.

“It has been a good, long ride and not a day goes by when someone doesn’t ask me when I am going to retire. And I say I work part-time and I have a pretty good gig going and they are really good to me,” said Lewis.

The group celebrated by looking at old photos of Lewis while enjoying a  cake that read, “We Appreciate You Bethel.”

The hospital gifted him with a hammock.
