A McMinnville man has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident after allegedly hitting a 19-year-old female on a scooter last Friday night.
McMinnville resident Robert Michael Hill, 37, was charged Thursday and faces an additional charge for driving on a revoked license.
Hill tried his best to avoid detection, going as far as to get rid of his car, a Nissan Altima, which officers had been looking for.
“He had already taken his car to the scrapyard,” said McMinnville Police detective Katelyn Cannon, who worked tirelessly to solve the case. “It’s been a long six days,” she said.
Heather Hix, 19, was hit last Friday night around 7:30 p.m. while she traveling toward the bypass on Faulkner Springs Road. Hix was on a Razor, which is a self-propelled scooter. The Nissan Altima was headed out of town on Faulkner Springs Road and they collided head-on.
The crash happened in the area of the Catholic Church.
“He came back to the scene and made sure she was OK,” said Cannon. “Then he took off.”
Hix was not exactly OK as she was hospitalized with injuries to both legs. Cannon reports she is at home now and is recovering.
“We were able to get a good description of the driver,” said Cannon. “As it turns out, based on the description, it was someone I am familiar with. I was able to catch up to him at his house today (on Thursday) and I convinced him to talk to me outside. During that conversation, he confessed.”
Booking information for Hill shows he lives nearby on Couch Street.
