Have you ever heard of a canine pool party? It’s a real thing and it’s happening this Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. so go ahead and air up your pooch’s favorite pool float. Admission is $4 per dog, while their owners are admitted free.

This third annual Water Paws event is offered by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and is dedicated to dogs enjoying a dip in Gilley Pool at the end of each season. It is a fundraiser for Helping Animals of Warren County (HAWC) to benefit animals.

“We expect to have around 120 dogs this year,” said Hollie Cox, HAWC president. “We will have door prizes and a pet food drive so for every item donated, the person gets an extra ticket for the prizes. The best part though is seeing the dogs happy and it shows on their whole body.”
Additionally, Cox said the more interest shown in Water Paws will likely generate more pet-friendly events.

“I’d encourage dog owners to bring their pets because we’d love to be able to offer more pet-friendly events and the more interest shown in our Doggie Pool Party will make it easier for us to get permission for future events,” she said.

If you’ve never been to a dog pool party, Cox says it’s entertaining and enjoyable for pet and person alike. You get to laugh and watch your pooch prance, swim and woof through the water and they get to cool off and exercise. Consider inviting your other dog-loving friends to this event because proceeds from HAWC’s vendor spaces will benefit the organization.

There are rules for the dog party:

• All dogs must have proof of current rabies vaccination.
• Dogs cannot show signs of aggression.
• No humans allowed past knee-deep water.
• Dogs must be on a leash when not swimming.
• All “accidents” must be cleaned up by the pet owner.

Before you bring your pet to the party, consider how your dog will interact with the other dogs. Be sure to watch for any signs that your dog is getting uncomfortable or stressed by another dog and separate him or her immediately.

Also, vendor booths are still available for $25. For more information, contact HAWC at 931-743-6012.
