First Baptist Church has donated 3,800 nonperishable food items to the Warren County Emergency Food Bank.
“We really appreciate this donation,” said Warren County Emergency Food Bank president Lester Cowell. “It helps us out until the McMinnville Postal Service holds its annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive over Mother’s Day weekend. We appreciate the community’s support in eliminating hunger and encouraging volunteerism.”
According to First Baptist Church member Preston Greer, the food was collected during the church’s Souper Bowl food drive.
“We have a church-wide food collection and a Sunday School Class competition,” said Greer. “We count it by units on which Sunday School Class can bring in the most pieces per class. We started doing this a few years ago and we’ve continued it. I think we are up over a third more from last year. It has been a blessing for the church and for the organization.”
It really is better to give than to receive, says Greer.
“This is such a good organization and I’m really impressed with how organized this Food Bank is. It’s a mission from the church to do our part. This is rewarding to help, but we aren’t doing it for the reward. It’s an open-heart giving. I’ve learned in mission work that you don’t do anything for the rewards. I don’t know why it’s so rewarding, but it is. You don’t do it for the reward, but it is rewarding. It’s an oxymoron.”
The church also donated $1,400 for any perishable food items needed.
