A drunk driver under the influence of drugs crashed his car, ran from the scene, fought with deputies and then fell asleep on his way to jail.
The man, Jeffrey Allen Ward, 33, is charged with second-offense DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting stop and simple possession of drugs. He is set to appear for hearing Feb. 16.
His charges come after he ran his car into a ditch near the intersection of Knight and Brown Prater roads.
“I noticed a vehicle in the ditch with the engine running,” said Sheriff’s Sgt. Billy Joe Crouch, noting witnesses then told him the driver had run from the scene after the crash.
Crouch said the suspect was discovered a short time later. “He was hiding in a ditch.”
The sergeant said Ward began resisting when he tried to take him into custody and that it took two officers to finally subdue him and get him into the back of the patrol car. Once at the jail, corrections officers found 14 Xanax and two hydrocodone pills on his person. They also discovered he had been trying to fight his father that day, the father noting his son had been taking Xanax the day in question.
Crouch noted Ward’s intoxication at the scene. “He was unstable on his feet and he fell asleep while being transported to jail.”
