The water department employee who lost his life Tuesday when a ditch collapsed around him has been identified.

Mickey Lee Fisher, 31, was on the job Tuesday on Phifer Mine Road in Van Buren County when the accident took place. Fisher had been an employee of Spencer Utility District since September, 2017.

Fisher was below ground in a ditch working to repair a broken water main when the walls caved in around him. The call for help was received by central dispatch Tuesday at 11:47 a.m.

A statement released by the city of Spencer praised Fisher as an “outstanding employee.” The statement said, in part, “Mickey Fisher, city employee, responded to a call from Van Buren County Highway Department about a water leak on a rural country road on the morning of Tuesday, April 2, and like always, Fisher gladly headed to the site of the water leak to serve the citizens of his community. While on site, there was a trench collapse. Rescue attempts were made for several hours but it is with deepest sorrow to share that all attempts to save Fisher were unsuccessful. We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and co-workers.”

Layne Funeral Home in Spencer is handling arrangements for Mr. Fisher. His service is set for this Saturday, April 6, at 2 p.m.
