If Director of Schools Bobby Cox was still in school, he would surely be making the first honor roll as the School Board has given him his highest marks ever in his latest assessment.
The yearly assessment of his work as director of schools was revealed during a recent Board of Education meeting. The six-member board gave him an overall score of 4.76 which is the highest score he has received from the board.
In 2015 and 2016, Cox received a 4.3 assessment. He was given a 4.6 in 2014.
The evaluation includes grades in five major areas. First is School Board relations, meaning how well he communicates with the board.
Second is community relationships. This covers keeping the public informed and working with the media.
Third is staff and personnel relationships. This is how he works with members of the school system he leads.
Fourth is job performance. This covers his vision for improvement and his handling of the school district’s finances.
The last area is student achievement. This involves making sure the district is doing all it can to maximize learning potential and help students reach their goals in education.
The system allows board members to grade the director on a 5-point scale with 1 being significantly below expectation and 5 being significantly above expectation.
Each school district in Tennessee is required to conduct an annual review of its director.
Cox’s reward is a contract extension which renews his contact another year. Directors of schools are allowed only up to four-year contracts so his contact is extended through 2021.
As has become his custom, Cox waived the pay raise that technically goes with the extension and rating, opting to take only what raise other school employees will get this year.
