Child seat check set for April 26

Highway Patrol Capt. R.C. Christian looks to ensure a child seat is installed properly at a previous safety checkpoint held in Warren County.

McMinnville Police Department is challenging local parents to prove their children are properly secured passengers.
“We are having a free child seat safety checkpoint at the Warren County Health Department on Wednesday, April 26, from 2 to 5 p.m.,” said McMinnville Police Lt. Mark Mara. “If your car seat passes our inspection, you will get a free ice cream cone coupon from Dairy Queen.”
The Police Department has been holding child safety seat inspections that are open to the public, as well as one-on-one inspections when individuals call the Police Department or Fire Department and request one. Inspections are given by individuals who are certified to check child safety seat installation.
Mara says the end result has been eye-opening.
“Only one out of every 10 car seats we inspect passes the test,” said Mara. “That’s scary. That means 9 out of 10 parents are driving around with their children in a car seat that isn’t installed property or is past the expiration date. A lot of parents don’t know that car seats expire, but they do.”
For parents who pass the test, the department will be giving them a coupon for a free Dairy Queen ice cream cone. Parents who do not pass will receive an education for their children’s safety.
“This isn’t about writing citations, and I can’t stress that enough,” said Mara. “We offer this service because we care about children. We had a motor vehicle accident this morning. The car seat wasn’t installed correctly and it expired in 2016. Luckily, the child was OK. Come by this event and make sure your child’s car seat passes the test.”
Motor vehicle crashes are a leading killer of children ages 1 to 13. From 2009 to 2013, an estimated 611,000 children were injured, and 3,335 were killed while riding in cars, pickups, vans, and SUVs.
Private car seat inspections can be arranged by calling McMinnville Police Department at 473-3808 or McMinnville Fire Department at 473-6739.
