Black History Month Youth Day Feb. 24

Events continue for the 2024 Black History Month observance and Feb. 24 showcases mentorship and career paths geared toward the younger population.

Event organizer Ella Richmond said, “Everyone has an obligation to recognize those that have blazed a trail to make our county, our state and our nation great, but we also have an obligation to prepare our youth to become productive citizens and create their own paths to the future.”

Richmond will moderate a panel discussion with younger individuals with ties to Warren County who have chosen career paths some would consider “unique."

Among the panel members who will be giving their insights and encouragement are:

Courtney Martin, a Flight Attendant and trainer for Delta Airlines and member of the aircrew supporting the Duke University football team.

Justin Nowlin, a mechanical engineer currently employed as a quality engineer specialist at Teledyne Energy Systems.

Tylan Martin, a model who has modeled for such international brands as New Balance and Nike and currently works as the Jordan Brand lead marketplace manager for Nike.

Representatives from the Black History Museum of Warren County Tennessee and Young Men United collaborated to address this year’s theme of “African Americans and the Arts” at the Youth Day event earlier this month.

Digital images of artwork by keynote speaker for the Feb. 10 program, Larry Cope, will be on display. In addition, art exhibits and poetry by Warren County High School students will be presented. Singing performances and spoken word renditions are on the agenda, as well. Refreshments will be served following the activities.

Richmond encourages everyone to come out and be a part of the Youth Day activities. She reminds everyone that “the program is not just for youth; it’s for all ages."

The program starts at noon on Feb. 24 and will be held in the Bernard Gym at 103 Bernard Drive, McMinnville, Tennessee 37110.
