Puppy problems continue to plaque Warren County Animal Control and Adoption Center. The closure continues.
“We had hoped to reopen on Saturday,” said Animal Control director Kim Pettrey, referring to Jan. 12.
A voluntary closure started Jan. 4 after several puppies began exhibiting signs of canine parvovirus infection, commonly known as parvo. Four puppies died, and six puppies were sent to rescue groups.
Pettrey said she believed the threat was contained, until Friday morning when two more puppies began to exhibit signs of having the virus.
“We can’t reopen,” she said. “To protect the public, we need to remain closed. We will remain under quarantine until we know the threat has passed.”
Staff members continue to sanitize and utilize pans of disinfectant to submerge their shoes as they move from room to room in an effort to prevent the spread.
The infection, which is usually seen in puppies that are between 6 weeks to 6 months old, has not spread to the adult dogs which have been vaccinated.
“We are going to continue our Pet of the Week,” said Pettrey. “The adult dogs are fine. Lady Bird would make a wonderful addition to someone’s family.”
Lady Bird, a 3-year-old bird dog mix, has a calm disposition.
She likes children, other animals and enjoyed being groomed for her newspaper debut. Her adoption fee is $97 and includes the cost for rabies vaccination and spay.
