Benita Allen sees hungry kids every day.In her job as a teacher’s assistant at Morrison School, Allen has gotten to know which children get enough to eat at home and which ones don’t.“We have a lot of kids who are hungry,” said Allen. The school system provides free breakfast and lunch to students when school is in session, but the weekends can be troublesome. That’s why Allen spearheaded a program about six years ago to send a sack of food home with certain students on Friday afternoons.“A few weeks into the school year we start to get an idea about which kids need it,” said Allen. “We try to do it as discreetly as possible.
