VFW Post 5064 Ladies Auxiliary has announced the themes for its 2014 scholarship contests and is accepting new members into the organization.
“We want to give students as much notice as possible so they can go ahead and start working on their entries for next year,” said Ladies Auxiliary president Phyllis Barnes. “Work on them through summer vacation and get a jump start on everyone.”
The organization offers five scholarships, with three being the Voice of Democracy, Patriot’s Pen and Patriotic Art. While students can use their patriotic imagination on the art, the theme used for VOD must be “Why I’m Optimistic About our Nation’s Future” and the theme for Patriot’s Pen must be “What Patriotism Means to Me.”
Scholarships have strict guidelines. To read about the rules and the other scholarships, visit www.lavfw.org or www.ladiesauxvfw.org.
Ladies Auxiliary has a motto of “Honoring the Dead While Helping the Living,” which Barnes takes to heart. She is currently Tennessee Ladies Auxiliary chaplain and is in line to be named president in two years.
“I am so proud to be the first lady from Warren County to be in line to be the Department of Tennessee president in two years,” said Barnes. “I have worked very hard for our veterans. All I ever wanted to do is work so our veterans would have a better life.”
Ladies Auxiliary is currently accepting new members. Barnes says the group’s main focus is helping veterans.
“What a joy it is to be able to help our veterans, and to fight for their rights and benefits that they were promised when they went into service,” she said. “If you have a veteran in your family you can honor them whether they are dead or alive, we invite you to join the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.”
