Two Warren County women were among thousands of competitors Monday for the 126th Boston Marathon.
Sarah Hoover finished the 26.2-mile race in a speedy 3:27:23. Not far behind her at the finish was Anne Hunter Myers, who finished in 3:30:57.
The two ran together for much of the race until Hoover pulled away around what’s known as Heartbreak Hill near the 21-mile mark.
Hoover and Myers are both avid local runners. Myers is the WCHS cross country coach and a regular winner of the Stars and Stripes Fun Run held in McMinnville on the Fourth of July.
In a touching moment for both women, they ran a portion of the marathon shoulder-to-shoulder with Adrienne Haslet and Shalane Flanagan.
Haslet, 41, lost her left foot, and nearly her life, nine years ago during the Boston Marathon bombing. A ballroom dancer at the time of the bombing, Haslet’s life has endured immense obstacles as she also suffered severe arm injuries in 2019 when she was struck by a car while crossing the street.
Said Haslet in an interview with the Washington Post, “It’s never lost on me that I almost lost my life. It’s front and center of my brain every day, almost every minute, and not in a creepy, morbid way, but I’m just overflowing with gratitude.”
Flanagan is a well-known distance runner who is an Olympic medalist and New York City Marathon champion who was running with Haslet for support.
