High-speed chase leads to jail

A man who ran from a trooper in his Volvo, topping 100 mph during the chase, has been sentenced to four months in jail.The driver, Bennie L. Simmons, 35, entered guilty pleas before Circuit Court Judge Bart Stanley to charges of evading arrest and driving on a suspended license. He was ordered to serve 120 days of a two-year sentence and pay $50 plus court costs.Highway Patrolman Rodney Whiles said he clocked Simmons doing 70 mph on Highway 55 and attempted to stop him.“He turned onto Old Well Road and accelerated at a high rate of speed,” Whiles said in his warrant against Simmons. “He continued at speeds in excess of 100 mph and drove with no regard to public safety.”The trooper said Simmons continued ignoring his lights and siren until turning into a private driveway off Shelbyville Road.
