Viola Community Fire Department will be dedicated to longtime fire chief Kevin Lawrence on Sunday during a ceremony set to begin at 3 p.m. at the fire hall.
Lawrence took over Viola fire chief duties from Harrison Smartt and served about a decade in that capacity until his death on May 5, 2013.
“He was a great, great asset, not only to the fire department but to the town of Viola and the whole Warren County community,” said current Viola Fire Chief Wayne Davenport. “He kept us going. He was the town mayor and he was president of the fair. He had a hand in it all.”
Lawrence applied for and obtained several grants for Viola’s fire department. One of those was a $200,000 grant that allowed a new fire hall to be built behind Viola Community Center. On Sunday, the fire hall will officially be named the Kevin E. Lawrence Memorial Fire Hall.
Davenport says friends and fellow firefighters are encouraged to attend the ceremony.
