Firefighters battled a salvage yard blaze into the morning at Turner’s Auto Salvage yesterday as flames shot hundreds of feet into the night sky accompanied by several explosions.“It’s estimated 300 to 400 vehicles were damaged or destroyed,” said McMinnville Fire Chief Randy Walker of the blaze that began around 9 p.m. Wednesday. “It was a case of surround and drown because the fire had spread across literally hundreds of vehicles.”Firemen believe the blaze in Newtown was sparked by lightning during a thunderstorm which peaked around 9 p.m. The cars, which were stacked on top of another, may have acted as a lightning rod, Walker said. A Bermuda Drive resident who lives near the fenced salvage yard called 911 to report seeing flames.
