McMinnville Police Chief Charlie Sewell will say goodbye to the community this Thursday during a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. at the police department on Red Road.Sewell’s last day on the job is this Friday as he has accepted a similar position in Georgia.Deputy Chief Bryan Denton will be named interim chief upon Sewell’s departure, a position he held five years ago when former chief Joe Melton retired and a search was held to find his replacement.City administrator David Rutherford says he doesn’t perceive a rush in filling the police chief position once Sewell leaves. He says he’s talked to Denton, who feels comfortable handling the duties until a new chief is found. As for the vacancy, Denton said Thursday he will apply for the job. Rutherford says he expects the city to look internally to fill the position before seeking outside applicants.
