Demolition well under way

The auditorium connected to the Blue Building has been leveled. There’s a gaping hole in the main structure where the two had been connected.
A crew has worked since Thursday to remove the auditorium.
The contract with Tri-State Development includes “enveloping” the main structure to close the hole and prevent damage until city officials decide what to do with it.
Officials voted to remove the auditorium and gym in early October. However, no decision has been made about the fate of the main structure.
Tri-State asked for two extensions in October, meaning the work may not be complete by Christmas.
“Work was supposed to begin in early October,” said McMinnville Public Works director Bill Brock. “The notice to proceed was ready, but Tri-State wasn’t. The company asked for an extension. Then, another one. Work began Nov. 7. The company has 60 days from that date to complete the work.”
A fence remains around the property to prevent people interested in the removal process at a safe distance. The fenced off parking lot is needed for the company’s equipment, as well as a space for piling bricks.
Removal of the two structures will cost $238,800.
